banal

Should chance and want collide
I think I’ll run away and hide
Before I get to compare
What I see to what is there

Before easy going smiles
Reveal all they disguise
And gently spoken words
Begin to sound absurd

Before time shows the hurt
Trapped within bits of dirt
Lying beneath the varnish
Whose luster has tarnished

Before I look till I’m disgusted
By the feelings I once trusted
And repaint gestures I mistook
To show the faults I overlooked

Before I’m lost in the gulf
Between what is and what’s enough
And find limits and drawn lines
Between what will and what i desire

Because truth is overrated
And more banal in fact
Than choosing an illusion
With which to interact
