dammed

Seems we only opened the gates a crack
Yet the waters broke through with a vengeance
wresting away our resolve once again
Now neck deep in it
we search for higher ground
waving our conscience and past regrets for reprieve
until the flood subsides
and drought finds us
with no strength
and too parched and withered
to resist opening the door just a crack
to see if there’s any water left
And there’s always more than we can handle
